You might try running alsamixer from a command line and looking at the
channels there.  There should be a "CD" channel there.  Sometimes, the
labeling in the mixer isn't exactly right either, so if the "CD" channel
doesn't work, then try some of the others.

For example, on my Thinkpad, the CD audio is hooked to the 'AUX" channel
as displayed in the mixer, not to "CD".

If you can get other audio working, but not CD, check and make sure you
have an audio cable running from your CDROM drive to your soundcard.
