I recommend 2 tools for this:

1) rdiff-backup
    see: http://fedoranews.org/ghenry/rdiff/ - a howto; links to
rdiff-backup etc.
2) keychain
    see: http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/keychain/ - allows you to use ssh
connections by cron using public key authentication; keychain acts as a
wrapper for ssh-agent and ssh-add; very comfortable; current RPM
available at: http://dev.gentoo.org/~agriffis/keychain/
