Take a look at this link:

Then download here:

http://dev.mysql.com/get/Downloads/MySQL-4.1/MySQL-4.1.9-0.src.rpm/from/pick

I used the above mentioned article to successfully install MySQL 4.1.9. 
It is not as convoluted as it initially seems.  However, I'm reluctant to
perform future updates.  Might not be as much fun...
