Ah, so it's just me then... ;-)  Well, I'll post this for future
reference... I've compiled a new version of my working kernel
(-1.12_FC2smp) and tried to boot from it... and I get the same
problem!  

But I also noticed that on a successful boot, I get

Red Hat nash version 4.1.18 starting
Mounted /proc filesystem
Creating /dev
Starting udev
Loading scsi_mod.ko module
SCSI subsystem initialised
Loading sd_mod.ko module
Loading aic7xxx.ko module

...and then here I get all the info related to my SCSI interface
booting, followed by...

Loading jdb.ko module
Loading ext3.ko module
Creating root device

Looks like this could be a SCSI problem?
