I had a problem even after installing mplayer plugin with sound and quicktime movies so I installed the win32 file into my /usr/lib/win32 dir. http://www1.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/codecs/windows-all-20050115.zip I think there are instructions in the doc but if not just find all the files and copy them to your win32 dir. You will get sound and all codec goodness after that.
