Seems like MySQL *is* running. What happens if you do:
service mysqld stop ps ax | grep -i mysql
Here you are :
[root@Magellan log]# service mysqld stop Stopping MySQL: [ OK ] [root@Magellan log]# ps ax | grep -i mysql [root@Magellan log]#
