Subject: yum: I'm missing something basic
First try with yum: 'yum list' gives complaint that the [base] url returns "connection refused". That's funny, if I paste the generated url into firefox I can get there every time. What gives?
Hard to tell without your yum config files.
Also, just for grins - what is the output of:
service iptables status
