Did you run menuconfig from within the kernel source tree you are trying to compile?? (for instance /usr/src/linux-2.6.10; or /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES/linux-2.6.10). As long as you are under the kernel source tree, there is no reason for it not to shouw up with that error... Maybe others (primarily regarding ncurses) but thato that kind of error.
