I forgot to mention some details:
FC3 2.6.10-1.760
After invoking zapping, dmesg prints this line:
application zapping uses obsolete OSS audio interface

The audio device is set on "kernel device" which is driven by OSS 3.8.16
The control volume with soundcardmixer is driver by "ICH4 OSS 3.8.16"
My soundcard is: 82801 EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) AC '97
Could there be an incompatability of the soundcard (ICH5) and the soundcardmixer (ICH4)?
Peter.

Let me get this straight, you are using the OSS drivers from the Open Sound System website? Or are you using the supplied FC3 drivers (kernel drivers)? From what I can make out of your message you are using custom OSS drivers that you got straight from the OSS site.

I am using drivers that came with FC3. I never installed OSS drivers from the OSS website.
Peter.
