Are you asking me or the OP? It shouldn't matter in either case... I use
notebooks, desktops, and servers and manage all of them the same way
*IF* I am editing the files directly.

On notebooks with GNOME where I choose (or the user chooses) to use
system-config-network, then I use the GUI and don't touch its files.
system-config-network makes copies of the important files and stores its
files in other locations. And while I *do* know those locations and can
edit them by hand, it creates more confusion for the GUI users when I do
that; so I choose to use only the tools they use to help them learn.
