Do a backup first.
You can try with the smartctl command:
to get status:
smartctl -a /dev/hdb
to run a test:
smartctl -t long /dev/hdb
Check status with "smartctl -a /dev/hdb": ... Self-test execution status: ( 247) Self-test routine in progress... 70% of test remaining. ...
Wait for the test to finish, and look at the status of the test.
You could also try running the badblocks program.
