I would suggest you to download utility like seatools ( for Seagate
HDD's) for testing and fixing your HDD rather than trying to solve the
problm yourself. I also had similar problem and I could salavage some
data from my hdd by marking bad sectors as bad using seatools.
reiserfs used to simply die on that disk.
