Is it that Netzero (my isp) requires an encrypted password? I have carefully checked password and username. Have even used somebody else's username and password, no luck. How would I know if this is problem on my end or isp's end? Any thoughts?

Have you tried working through the guide at http://axion.physics.ubc.ca/ppp-linux.html ? I haven't tried Netzero but I've used the discovery techniques outlined there to get connected with a couple of local ISPs that clearly didn't really want my business.
Good luck!
