Somethings wrong right? I've checked fstab and it looks normal ( /dev/hda6 swap swap defaults 0 0 ) but I've obviously done something wrong if my system can't even see my swap partition.

That fstab entry looks just like mine, which seems OK:

# fgrep swap /etc/fstab
/dev/hda6 swap swap defaults 0 0
# swapon -s
Filename         Type            Size    Used    Priority
/dev/hda6        partition       514040  17520   -1
