OK, now when adding the 'nofb' I got a ton of white dashes and then the waterfall of color. Incidentally, I tried a command I needed from redhat 8.0 which was ide=nodma. Could that be the problem? They are not on the command line args in GRUB as viewed by typing 'e'. Try adding "nofb" to the grub command line args and see if that helps.
