In other words, the whole thing is a huge kludge. Instead of doing this, it seems like the proper thing to do is to fix the alleged stupidity.
Exactly. And once "alleged stupidity" is fixed, NetworkManager will no longer require bind, but it will be left to linger around on user's systems. Which makes this kludge the kludge of the kludges.
