what am i doing wrong?

The SELinux policy prevents httpd from accessing the terminal by default. Make sure you have installed all the latest updates, and run:

# setsebool -P httpd_tty_comm 1

thanx! this actually explained and solved my issues!

as root to permanently enable terminal access for httpd. An alternative is to use:

# httpd | cat
