Right, but that is my point.

Perhaps you have a USB 1 or 1.1 hub and so the device either steps down to the 1/1.1 speeds or won't work because it absolutely needs USB 2.0 to work properly.

BTW: when you do 'modprobe -r ehci-hcd' and use 'uhci-hcd' - you are using
usb-1.1 (not usb-2). The disk access is slow...
