Usually I have /home on a seperate partition so I clear out all the .gnome* stuff and other things outside of my .loki and .mozilla dirs. Then I just upgrade the thing. Sure, it will upgrade. IF .... ok hold on to your hat .... you did not add a lot of stuff from outside repositiories and even then it is usually cleaner to just reinstall.
