I suspect the old application is expecting OLD style ptys (perhaps BSD style ptys). These are not enabled by default. A kernel recompile/ module is needed. If you still have the original source you should modify it to use the new style pty interface where each pty is created on the fly as needed and not enumerated in /dev/ -- T o m M i t c h e l l spam unwanted email.
