Sure sounds like iptables is up or you've got a problem moving larger packets. service iptables status says what?

What does ifconfig say about errors etc? Try ping with the -s 1500 option to try moving a larger packet. Regular ping is 58 bytes, and ftp connect is also small.

Also reboot with acpi=off as a boot option and see if like magic everything works.
