smartd monitors hard disks that implement the "SMART" specification.
This allows the disk to monitor its health and report back to the
host.  It's mostly useful for newer disks.

It looks like Fedora has a manpage for smartd so you can learn more
about it by running "man smartd".

There are probably log messages in /var/log/messages that indicate why
smartd failed to run.
