Well, I fixed the problem when switching to the 2.6 kernel series, looking into the psmouse module code. If I remember well the "proto" parameter forces the psmouse module to use the "imps" protocol instead of the synaptics one. Also I think that as drawback the touchpad does not use its full functionality but works in psmouse emulation mode.
