I have a Thinkpad G40 and I have tried several times to attach a
monitor to my laptop so I can extend my desktop to the monitor.  When 
set this up using the supplied GUI tools, I activate the 2nd monitor
and then my laptop screen goes blank.

Has anyone gotten this to work using a similar setup?

ThinkPad G40 & Viewsonic VG700B monitor.
