Much more work, but a netboot could work too. Either PXEboot or classic BOOTP/TFTP has worked for me. There's docs out there, but be prepared for a lot of hair pulling, cursing and general malaise.

I have used the network grub for a few years, the same CDROM will boot all kernels via a tftpserver and dhcp. Here are my notes:
