OK, operator error here...

Question should be:

If I have LogLevel QUIET in /etc/ssh/sshd_config, and start sshd w/ -q, why
do I still see all of the session opened/closed messages in
/var/log/messages?

Thanks,
Aaron

>From man sshd_config:

LogLevel
Gives the verbosity level that is used when logging messages from
sshd. The possible values are: QUIET, FATAL, ERROR, INFO, VER-
BOSE, DEBUG, DEBUG1, DEBUG2 and DEBUG3. The default is INFO.
DEBUG and DEBUG1 are equivalent. DEBUG2 and DEBUG3 each specify
higher levels of debugging output. Logging with a DEBUG level
violates the privacy of users and is not recommended.

>From man sshd:
-q	Quiet mode. Nothing is sent to the system log. Normally the
beginning, authentication, and termination of each connection is
	logged.

The SSH connection is and stays established? To see more use debug mode
either from client side or on the daemon side or even both.
