	You didn't say what make or model laptop.  It varies a lot
with laptops.  Some (notably some Compaq Armada's) require that you
have the external video connected before powering on the system.
OTOH...  I did not have to worry about that with my Tecra 8200 or
Tecra 9100.  I now have a Dell D600 which comes up in different modes
depending on if the external video is connected when it's powered on.

	Have you tried the video out to a regular monitor?
