go to  system tools | network device control  
see if you have any devices listed  
if so, make sure it is activated,  and if it is, click the configure  button 
 hardware tab 
lists out the current devices installed on the PC 
under the device tab
check the ip  settings  click edit to see if your card is set to
automatically obtain  ip with dhcp (if your using it) and make sure
you check the box next to obtain dns settings from provider.
obviously if your not using dhcp, uncheck those, type in your ip you
want to use.
Next go to the DNS tab, 
add the DNS settings 

a good idea to reboot when your done.  
on boot up click the arrow to show details and watch for the eth
device to be checked.
