1 - make sure the user you are trying to log in as has a valid shell

2 - run authconfig ('system-config-authentication') 
  - this will generate a configuration in at least...
    - /etc/pam.d/system-auth
    - /etc/ldap.conf

3 - make sure you check /var/log/secure for clues

You might want to post contents of /etc/pam.d/system-auth
and /etc/sysconfig/authconfig
