Thank you I found the Proxim Gold for < $30 online. Now all I need is
a PCI card.

Please note I am looking for cards that are supported natively in the
kernel, I don't want to have to worry about compling drivers every
time I update the kernel. Compiling is not my thing.

I have an Avaya PCI card which works "out of the box".
This is actually a PCI-to-PCMCIA adaptor
with an Orinoco Gold PCMCIA card in it.

The other approach I've had good success with is the the ethernet client adapters (for non-mobile applications)... Thatt of course requires no drivers at all on the connected machine (you do need ethernet). because of the prevalence of tivo's and game consoles these things have been getting more common and cheaper.
