You need to turn off, then back on the scanner or unplug, then replug the scanner back into the usb port.
Open up a terminal that is found under system tools and type xsane in the terminal. There used to be a link to launch xsane this way. Now you have to open up gimp to get to the scanner and only if you add the correct plugin for gimp to aquire scanners.
This should bring up the scanner program and you should be able to figure out how to use this program.

Though this is not ideal, the 2.6 kernel does not include the scanner module that was included within the 2.4 kernel. Refer to this bug for the expanation.

The bug report is long, but should be educational for the steps needed to get scanners to work. I believe that I have an hp 2100c scanner and have scanned a few documents with it. Hopefully an easier solution can be determined and applied. This is not an ideal way to scan. When you launch xsane, it should just find the scanner and work. Having the launcher back for xsane would be ideal also.

It would save me a lot of time if you just gave up and went mad now.
