"Upstream" means the original distribution of code made by the
software's author, as opposed to patches or configuration changes made
by packagers for their RPMs etc.

Aa-ha! Thank you. I've been wondering about this for a while (I see it
in Synaptic every so often 'upgrades - upstream').
