php has a varying number of dependencies, from a few to a lot, based on what you specify in your ./configure options. When ./configure stops and complains, it usually means you are missing a dependency. On Fedora Core 3, you need a lot of 'devel' libraries to compile php from the Fedora-packaged source successfully. You can quickly check whether you have a package installed by following what Paul suggests above, or search the rpm database with rpm -qa. For example:
[rlc@bobcp4 ~]$ rpm -qa | egrep curl curl-7.12.1-1 curl-devel-7.12.1-1
