I've lost my own question about this, but let me reply to my query from a few days ago why X didn't work on this laptop: A bit of googling helped, via https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=118860 we figured out that adding the line vga=792 to to the grub or lilo boot would do the trick... - peter
