File the bug, but also try this:
I had the same problem as you and almost gave up. Finally some obscure web search foudn me the solution. I added "i8042.nomux" to the end of the kernel line in /etc/grub.conf and suddenly my touchpad came to life. I don't know what other steps were important because I tried a LOT of different things before I found this.
