What I did: Edit /etc/cpuspeed.conf, modify the DRIVER line to read: DRIVER="speedstep-smi" Add module parameters to /etc/modprobe.conf: #enable speedstep for PIII on 440BX options speedstep-smi smi_port=0xb2 smi_cmd=0x82 smi_sig=1 The cpuspeed daemon should now start on each reboot and vary processor speed depending on load. My cpu/MB combo supports 1GHz/700MHz. You can verify current speed with cat /proc/cpuinfo. This laptop identifies itself as: Winbook Z1, BIOS 1.06A. Kevin Freeman
