I just booted  into Fedora Core 3 in single user mode without smp, and
tried to access the hdc drive and it froze up.  Then I booted the
system into Mandrake Move (which has a 2.4 kernel) and was able to
access my files on hdc with no problems.

I'd say it's a pretty sure bet that the problem is with Fedora Core 3
or the 2.6 kernel.
