The kernel on my FC3 system is vmlinuz-2.6.9-1.667.  Did you change
the name?  By original kernel, do you mean the default one in FC3? 
Perhaps it might help to see your entire grub entry.  I assume you
have "root (hd0,0)" on the line above?
