What's your video card? I'm using an on-board ATI Rage 4mb on an old
Dell Optiplex GX1 and the fade-out has always been choppy. I used to
have a TNT2 which wasn't choppy. I'm also using a T30 with a Radeon
7500 that also fades smoothly when logging out. I guess it's all
dependent on your video card.

The fix I had was to enable Assistive Technologies. It's under
"Applications" -> "Preferences" -> "Accessibility" -> "Assistive
Technology Support" in FC3. Just check the option "Enable Assistive
Technologies", and don't bother checking anything else. It should
disable the fading. I say should as I've only tested this on FC1 and
2. I haven't tried on FC3 yet but it's all probably the same.

No I won't try as it's 3:10am here and I have to sleep. =)
