I'd suspect a setting somewhere in a hidden file or directory of your home directory. Try setting up a new test user and seeing if logging in as that user works. If it does, I'd try moving the .gconf* and .gnome* directories (if you're in GNOME) or .kde directory (if you use KDE). That might be best done while you aren't logged in under your usual account.
