if your ip address is 10.x.x.x or 172.16.x.x - 172.31.x.x or 192.168.x.x you in a private network that is using NAT to forward packets to your box. Internet | ------- public ip address (unkown address) -modem- NAT ------- | ------- private ip address (10.x.x.x) - box - ------- Most ADSL modems use DHCP to request a public ip address from ISP. If this is the case then you public ip address will not be the same. You say you have a router; I assume you have it installed between the modem and the box. Internet | ------- public ip address (unkown address) -modem- NAT ------- | ------- - rtr - ------- | ------- private ip address (10.x.x.x) - box - ------- if this is indeed the case, the same principle holds; you will have a public ip address that will change on your modem. You will need to request a static ip for the outside interface on your router. Then you can use Nat port forwarding on the router to reach your box. If this is not clear please let me know.
