This is the workaround that I use:
open openoffice
run this command to find out the language files (and language number) currently in use:
/usr/sbin/lsof -c soffice.bin|grep resource
cd to the resource dir and delete all .res files that don't have that number in them
For me (US English) it's 64501. This works fine for me with all versions up to and including 1.1.1-6.
