desktop settings won't stay

I recently tried installing Fedora Core 2 on a test machine at work and
ran into an anomaly.

As the subject says, some desktop session settings won't "stick" between
logons. Home directories are nfs-mounted from an SGI server (Origin 2000)
running IRIX 6.5.20.

When I set up my desktop the size and shape of terminal windows remain
between logons. However, the autohide property of the gnome panel goes
away. I also prefer the "select window when mouse moves over them" to be
active. That property also goes away when I log off.

These things work properly when I create a user with a locally-mounted
home directory so I am suspecting this may be related to the nfs-mounted
home directory.

Does anyone have pointes to something obvious I may have missed before I
file something in bugzilla?
