Computer Associates have opensourced the Ingres RDBMS. Check out
http://opensource.ca.com/projects/ingres/

Mysql and Postgresql are widely used on the linux platfom (even on
production systems). IBM has also released its Cloudscape database to
the open source community under the name Derby. If you are interested
in a pure Java DBMS implementation (eg for embedded use within J2SE
and J2EE apps) Derby is the way to go.
