Answering my own question now, omitting the previous text, it is awkward to include in digest mode... After getting the pcspkr module installed the bell was still not working in KDE. I found this via google, on a Debian list... The solution is via the menu Preferences->Control Panel->Reginal & Accessibility->Accessibility where you can check a box saying "Use system bell". Now why didn't I think of that?
