You may have to convert it to ext2 first using tune2fs, then resize, and revert to ext3. Be aware that this may change the partition numbering on your system such that the kernel may no longer point to the right root device or swap area; make sure you have a working, bootable floppy or CD from which to recover if this happens. To fix this you may need to append root and swap directives to your boot loader configuration (lilo or grub) or use rdev to modify the kernel itself to point to the right partitions.
If it were me, I'd just create a new filesystem in the space and use it that way. Much less bother.
