Do I understand you correctly? You normally boot to a graphical mode login, with mouse pointer and the works. Then the graphical view disappears, and is replaced by a text mode screen. It only has the words you quoted: there's nothing about "Fedora Core release 1". What happens if you press Ctrl-Alt-F1, do you get a text mode login screen? If you do, log in as root, CAREFULLY change /etc/inittab so the line "id:5:initdefault:" reads "id:3:initdefault:", and reboot: you should come up to the same login screen. Then log in, run startx > error.log 2>&1 and send error.log to the list.
