Hi, I just bought sybex's linux+ book which says its cd will run over Linux or some cruddier OS's. I cannot get either the 'flashcards' or the 'test engine' section of the cd to run over FC1. It tells me to get the shockwave plug in. I did all this logged in as root, so it naturally put stuff under /root. Macromedia.com says their downloads support Red Hat 9, but there shouldn't be a significant differrence between that and FC1 (right?) /mnt/cdrom/Flashcards/PC It put the flashplayer_installer.tar.gz file under /root Unpacked it creates a directory called flashplayer_installer Then it tells you to un-tar it but it says to do so from /flashplayer_installer. But when I cd to the root, there is no such directory (thank god I didnt' want it t there anyway). But there ALSO isn't one under /root anyway so I am confused. ? Error messages I get: tar (child): /root/install_flash_player_7_linux.tar.gz: Cannot open: No such file or directory tar (child): Error is not recoverable: exiting now tar: Child returned status 2 tar: install_flash_player_7_linux/flashplayer-installer: Not found in archive tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors NOW the only thing I know to do -- try to run these things off the cd --('.exe style').... When I doublecick any of the icons, it wants to associate an app with the .swf files that are on the cd which I am hoping will work. Question for the group is: Is there a way to fool shockwave so I can get this thing working? For giggles meanwhile I just tried to open the electonic book pdf file on the cd (easy, right?) xpdf tells me it is encrypted and password protected and it can't open it. ggv tells me 'file is not a vaild postscript document'. [GRR... this works on an xp box at my workplace, and did NOT require a password! ] Btw, I just upgraded the whole os via yum, also loaded wine to see if that would work (must I buy 'crossover' and hope for the best? How irritating, not to get something suppossedly *SO* simple going...Any info is greatly appreciated! Marc
