I was going to jump in here, till I spotted the parallel port, which 
is YACOW (Yet Another Can Of Worms), so I'll guess that the problem 
is probably in the config file, either in /etc/sane or /usr/local/etc 
depending on the rpm/tarball installation.

However, there is a mailing list for sane/xsane, I believe its on 
www.mostang.com, that you can subscribe to that should be able to 
tell you how if you ask the right question.  There should also be a 
link to some howto's that may answer your question.
