Set echo 0 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_window_scaling on any of the FC2 machines and you will instantly get an quick response from the SMTP, without any lags. If TCP window scaling is on, then you get the described behaviour. There was quite some discussion about problems with TCP window scaling and kernel 2.6, i.e. articles available on lwn.net.
